Prominent Republican Slams Trump For Acting Like a Sloppy Clown At G7 Summit

Ha - a Republican with a spine

Even Republicans are speaking out against President Trump’s bad behavior, lack of preparation, and sloppy appearance at the G7 summit, to which Trump arrived late, left early, and during which Trump continued to insult and threaten our key allies. Republican strategist Steve Schmidt went so far as to say that Trump disgraced both the presidency and the country as he “beclowned” himself at the summit, saying in a tweet that “from his slovenly appearance to his unpreparedness, ignorance and arrogance, he beclowned himself”.

Trump made additional insults both to the G7 summit as a whole and to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in particular even after leaving the summit early. First, Trump went back on his plan to sign off on the group communique normally signed by all member countries at the end of the summit. Trump claimed that was due to Trudeau saying he was insulted by Trump’s tariffs in a news conference after the summit. Trump’s claim is ridiculous just on its face, because those comments from Trudeau exactly mirror comments he made last week indicating that Canada was offended at tariffs against them by Trump on the basis of national security, so they should have been no surprise to Trump. Canada is, or at least was, one of our closest allies – they do not pose a national security threat to the United States, but national security is the only basis on which Trump has the power to impose tariffs, so Trump is misusing that power against key allies for other reasons and calling it national security.

Trump, who can’t seem to handle criticism of any kind, also reacted by insulting Trudeau, calling him “very dishonest & weak” and Trump tacked on threats of imposing tariffs on car imports. Yet again, Trump’s impulsiveness got the better of him, and made a tense situation much, much worse. According to The Hill:

Trump made headlines at the G7 summit Saturday when he called for Russia to be readmitted to the group, after being removed over the annexation of Crimea. Other world leaders in the group rejected the proposal. Trump also refused to back a joint communique issued by the participating nations at the end of the summit, and slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “very dishonest & weak.”

Trump’s full two tweet rant on this subject was, “Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!…PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!”

Yet again Trump is acting out, being immature, lashing out with insults and threats in response to the slightest perceived slight. No wonder Steve Schmidt is slamming Trump for his behavior, saying Trump “beclowned” himself at the G7 summit – that slam is not a surprise, except for the fact that it comes from a Republican.
