President Trump is avoiding the White House Correspondents dinner tonight, most likely because his ego can’t handle jokes at his expense, but it turns out he will not be able to avoid criticism tonight, as protesters will be flocking to his campaign event in Washington Township, Michigan. According to ClickOnDetroit:
This will be the second second straight year President Trump plans to hold a rally instead of attending the Correspondents Dinner…The event is expected to begin around the same time as the White House Correspondents Dinner. Organizers of the “Protest Trump: No Hate In Our State” Facebook group are calling for a protest outside Total Sports Park (where Trump’s rally will be held). The group posted the following statement: “Trump is coming to Michigan. Macomb County is once again being targeted as the GOP turning point for Michigan. We all will be showing up in demonstration that most in our state do NOT support the Trump agenda. All decent people regardless of political affiliation have reason to attend and speak out with a unifying voice: NO HATE IN OUR STATE!” BAMN (The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights, and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary) also is organizing a protest outside the rally titled “Shut Down Trump in Michigan! Trump must resign or be removed!“
Trump clearly would like to surround himself with a crowd looking up at him with misty-eyed approval tonight while he appeals to people’s baser instincts, but protesters may sour the experience for Trump. Trump has tried to use his not attending the White House Correspondents as a tool to get campaign donations. According to The Hill:
President Trump explained to supporters in a campaign fundraising email Tuesday that he decided against attending this weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner because he didn’t want to spend the night with “fake news liberals.” “My staff asked, ‘Mr. President, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is coming up. Will you go?’” Trump said in the email from his campaign. “I said, ‘Why would I want to be stuck in a room with a bunch of fake news liberals who hate me?’”
Of course, going to the White House Correspondents Dinner and laughing along can show that a person is capable of taking a joke, capable of not taking themselves so seriously, and make them seem more likable, but Trump doesn’t get that. Trump’s ego is far too fragile to handle the jokes that would be made at his expense and prefers to be somewhere, like this rally of supporters or on Fox News, where he won’t be questioned or criticized. However, by protests and comments on Trump’s tweets, that criticism is all but inescapable for this narcissist with the fragile ego. Trump boasted on Twitter about the rally, “Look forward to being in the Great State of Michigan tonight. Major business expansion and jobs pouring into your State. Auto companies expanding at record pace. Big crowd tonight, will be live on T.V.”

Comments on Trump’s tweet roasted Trump even more fiercely than likely would have happened had Trump actually attended the White House Correspondents Dinner. This person showed Trump arriving off of Air Force One as an old-fashioned toddler, complete with bib, propeller hat, and “I’m a GENIUS!” balloon.

People also called it as they see it. As this person said, “Trump is excited to get up on stage, lie a lot, bash minorities, encourage assault on minorities, scream about how he’s a victim, promote conspiracy theories about why others are really the criminals, call foreign dictators great people & person friends, call Americans names….”

Another person tweeted, “Spanky, have a great time at your pre-vetted, ego-trip rally. I know your pathetically small self esteem needs this sort of thing… but never forget: you are incompetent, you are a laughingstock, you are guilty Mueller is coming, Hillary got more votes, Obama had a bigger crowd”

Several other people suggested that Trump drink tap water from Flint, Michigan, while he is there, since the government is now claiming the tap water is now safe to drink, but many people believe it is still too contaminated with lead to be drinkable.
When multiple, well-organized groups are set to protest your campaign rally, it’s a sign you aren’t liked too well as a President, but then President Trump has a sort of tunnel vision, where in his mind compliments are truth and criticisms are lies, every time. Trump has all the self-awareness of a block of concrete. It will make him feel better to hear the roar of an approving crowd, even if he has to get through the disapproving roar of protesters on his way in. But he doesn’t understand that this whole maneuver to soothe his ego is completely transparent, that it makes him look self-indulgent, petty, hateful, and unable to take a joke. It would probably be better for his image to actually go to the White House Correspondents Dinner, but his ego is far too fragile to take it. Thank goodness we still have the freedom of speech to be able to protest.
